So, you’re thinking about professional teeth whitening… exciting! Maybe you’ve been wanting to brighten your smile for a while, or maybe you’re just starting to explore your options. Either way, you probably have a few questions before taking the next step. How does professional teeth whitening work? Will it be sensitive? How long do results last? What should you expect during your appointment? We hear these questions all the time, and in this blog, we’re answering the most common questions about professional teeth whitening to help you feel informed, prepared, and confident before your appointment. Let’s get started!
What is professional teeth whitening and how does it work?
Professional teeth whitening is a treatment designed to brighten the natural colour of your teeth by removing stains and discolouration that build up over time. We use a specially formulated whitening gel that works through the enamel to target stains and discoloration. Combined with LED light technology, the treatment helps enhance the whitening process and reveal a brighter smile.
How long does the appointment take?
Our Full Whitening treatment takes approximately 1 hour and is your initial whitening session, targeting existing stains and helping reveal a brighter shade. Our Boost Whitening treatment is about 45 minutes and is a follow-up session after your initial treatment to refresh and maintain your results.
Is professional teeth whitening safe?
Yes, professional teeth whitening is 100% safe. Our whitening technicians are trained in proper application techniques, and the treatment follows a controlled process using products backed by the science of teeth whitening. We also use protective gum barriers during treatment to help shield your gums and keep the whitening gel applied only where it’s needed, on your teeth.
Professional whitening is designed to be enamel-friendly and uses carefully formulated products to brighten your teeth, unlike harsh over-the-counter strips or DIY whitening hacks that may not be suitable for everyone.
Will it cause sensitivity?
Sensitivity is often the number one concern people have before getting their teeth whitened, but it’s not something you need to worry about. Our whitening gels are specially formulated to be gentle while still delivering effective results. Many of our clients share that they experience little to no sensitivity during or after their treatment, and for those who do notice some sensitivity, it is usually temporary and goes away shortly after. If you’re prone to sensitivity, using a sensitivity toothpaste a few days before your appointment and after your treatment can help support a more comfortable experience.
Is there an age limit for teeth whitening?
There’s no upper age limit for teeth whitening. Whether you're in your 20s, 40s, 60s, or beyond, professional teeth whitening can be a great option if you're looking to brighten your natural teeth. In Canada, legal teeth whitening products are approved for ages 12 and above, as this is when most permanent teeth have fully developed, allowing the treatment to be carried out safely and effectively. Before any treatment, we’ll assess your teeth and oral health to make sure professional teeth whitening is suitable for you. This allows us to provide safe, personalized treatment and help you achieve the best possible results.
Can I get my teeth whitened if I have crowns, fillings, or veneers?
Yes, you can still have your teeth whitened if you have crowns, fillings, veneers, or other dental restorations. However, it's important to know that professional teeth whitening only works on natural teeth. It won't change the color of crowns, veneers, fillings, or bonding, so these restorations will stay the same shade while your natural teeth become whiter. If needed, we can advise you on the best timing for any future dental work to help everything blend beautifully.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have braces?
If you have fixed braces, it's best to wait until your orthodontic treatment is complete before whitening your teeth. The whitening gel can't reach the enamel underneath the brackets, so once they're removed, you may notice darker areas where the brackets were attached. If you wear removable clear aligners, whitening may be possible since the trays can be taken out during treatment. We'll assess your teeth and let you know if it's the right time to whiten.
What if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider before booking a professional whitening treatment. While there is currently no evidence that professional teeth whitening is harmful during pregnancy or while lactating, there also isn't enough research to confirm that it is completely risk-free. For this reason, it is a personal decision, and we always recommend getting clearance from your doctor before proceeding.
Will it make my existing sensitivity worse?
Not necessarily. Having sensitive teeth doesn't mean you can't have professional teeth whitening. Because we use a controlled application process, the whitening gel is applied only to your teeth while protective gum barriers help shield your gums throughout the treatment. This allows us to whiten your teeth safely and comfortably. If you already experience sensitivity, we recommend using a sensitivity toothpaste for a few days before your appointment and continuing afterwards if needed. We'll also assess your teeth beforehand and answer any concerns to make sure the treatment is right for you.
How white will my teeth get?
Your results will depend on your starting tooth shade, the type of staining you have, and how your teeth naturally respond to whitening. Your lifestyle also plays a role. Habits like smoking or regularly drinking coffee, tea, red wine, or other staining beverages can affect both your starting shade and your final results. Some stains lift more easily than others, while deeper or long-standing stains may require additional treatments to achieve your desired shade. That said, most clients notice a visible difference after the initial session, with their smile looking noticeably brighter.
How long will the results last?
The results of professional teeth whitening vary from person to person, but they can typically last 6 months to years, depending on your lifestyle and oral hygiene habits. To help maintain your brighter smile, we recommend regular brushing, good oral hygiene, and boost whitening treatments as needed to refresh your results.
How often can I get my teeth whitened?
It really depends on your smile goals and lifestyle. If you'd like to maintain your brightest shade year-round, we recommend starting with a full whitening session, followed by boost whitening treatments every 3 months. If you're okay with your teeth naturally fading a shade or two before your next touch-up, a boost appointment every 6 months is a great option.
Is there anything I should do before my teeth whitening appointment?
To help you get the best results, we recommend:
Brush and floss your teeth.
Eat a meal beforehand, as you'll need to avoid eating for 1 hour after your treatment while the whitening gel continues to work.
If you have sensitive teeth, start using a sensitivity toothpaste a few days before your appointment.
Let us know if you've recently had dental work or are experiencing any tooth pain or sensitivity so we can advise you accordingly.
What should I avoid after my teeth whitening treatment?
The first 24 to 48 hours after your whitening treatment are the most important. Think of your teeth like a sponge. During this time, they're more likely to absorb colors from food and drinks, so following your aftercare instructions will help protect your newly whitened smile.
To help maintain your results, we recommend:
Follow a white diet for the first 24 to 48 hours. Choose light-colored foods such as chicken, rice, pasta, potatoes, cauliflower, bananas, yoghurt, and white fish.
Avoid dark-colored foods and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, cola, curry, soy sauce, tomato-based sauces, berries, and beetroot.
If you do have coloured drinks, use a straw where possible to reduce contact with your teeth.
Avoid smoking or vaping, as nicotine and tar can quickly stain newly whitened teeth.
Continue using a sensitivity toothpaste if you experience any temporary sensitivity.
Following these simple aftercare tips will help you enjoy a brighter smile for longer and get the most from your whitening treatment.
Is professional teeth whitening really worth it?
Absolutely! Professional teeth whitening is one of the quickest ways to refresh your appearance and boost your confidence.
A brighter smile can make you look more refreshed, healthy, and confident. People often notice something looks different about you, even if they can't quite put their finger on what it is. Trust us, once you see your smile without the stains, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Most of our clients say they wish they'd booked their whitening earlier, and they never want to go back!
